"Shaitaan" (2024) has garnered attention from various film critics and bloggers, each offering unique perspectives on its narrative and execution.
Shaune B Ryder's Review:
Ryder describes "Shaitaan" as a Bollywood horror-thriller that delves into themes of black magic and voodoo. The plot follows a family's encounter with a sinister figure who uses black magic to control their daughter. Ryder appreciates the film's clean entertainment, devoid of unnecessary sleaze or explicit content, and highlights Janki Bodiwala's performance as particularly noteworthy. However, he notes that while the first half is well-executed, the film loses momentum post-intermission, with predictable plot points and missed opportunities in cinematography. He concludes that it's suitable for a one-time watch, offering some suspense and mystery without significant horror elements.
Baradwaj Rangan's Analysis:
Rangan finds the conception of "Shaitaan" interesting, noting that while it revolves around a teenage girl's possession, the antagonist (played by R. Madhavan) doesn't possess inherent supernatural powers. Instead, he employs black magic to exert control, presenting a fresh take on the possession trope. Rangan suggests that the film leans more towards a thriller than a horror, and while it could have benefited from more chilling moments, it remains generically watchable.
Sanjeev Kotnala's Perspective:
Kotnala summarizes "Shaitaan" as a tale of an occultist, Vanraj (R. Madhavan), who infiltrates the family of Kabir (Ajay Devgn) and Jyoti (Jyothika) with malicious intent. He highlights the family's struggle to protect their daughter from Vanraj's sinister plans, emphasizing their helplessness as a central theme. Kotnala implies that the film portrays the battle between the family's desperation and the antagonist's malevolent designs.
These reviews collectively suggest that "Shaitaan" offers a blend of suspense and thriller elements, with commendable performances, especially by Janki Bodiwala. While the film presents an intriguing narrative on black magic and control, some critics feel it could have delved deeper into horror elements and refined its execution in the latter half.
Vanraj asks Kabir and Jyoti to give Jahnvi to him, as he needs their permission to do so. When they refuse, Vanraj hits Janvhi and Kabir attacks him. Vanraj orders Janhvi to break the head of Dhruv and she does.
Later, police arrive at the farmhouse as Jyoti calls on the police helpline from the phone in the rice box. Seeing police on the door, Vanraj orders Janhvi to switch on the gas cylinder and sit over it by holding a matchstick. He threatens Kabir and Jyoti that if they tell anything to police, he'll order Jahnvi to burn the matchstick and kill herself. The family acts normal with the police and the police finally leave.
Kabir offers money in exchange for sparing them. Vanraj agrees and leaves the house but sets the money on fire, declaring that he has no use for materialistic things; he reveals himself to be a demon who aims to control the world, believing himself to be as good as God. He orders Janhvi to continuously slap herself and then orders her to dance for him. Janhvi continues dancing for more than an hour. Vanraj orders Janhvi to bring a knife and he then goes to sleep, instructing Janhvi to stab anyone who approaches.
